- Schapira, Hermann Tzevi
- (1840-98)Lithuanian Zionist. He was born in Erswilken, and was initially rabbi and rosh yeshivah in a Lithuanian townlet. He later lived in Kovno, Berlin and Heidelberg, where he taught mathematics at the university. After the pogroms in Russia in 1881 he joined the Hibbat Zion movement, and was a delegate to the First Zionist Congress in 1897. At the Congress he proposed the foundation of the Jewish National Fund and the Hebrew University.
